While WiFi was working, maybe I should have tried at least one spare USB adapter in that computer, to make sure it had Linux drivers and was ready to go. To connect, I used an external USB adapter. This was an old desktop computer whose motherboard did not offer WiFi circuitry. One possibility was that the WiFi dongle was bad. ![]() My Google searches weren’t turning up good explanations, so I decided to write this post, hoping that it would eventually arrive at an explanation of how to solve this problem. ![]() I had no idea what had caused this, and my initial attempts at a solution failed. Normally, when I ran Ubuntu, it would display the vaguely funnel-shaped WiFi icon at the right of the screen, an icon that looked a little like the path left by a car’s windshield wiper. But then, as described in another post, I had fiddled with that installation and, in the process, I seem to have wrecked its ability to go online. I had installed Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS onto a USB drive. ![]()
